Mary L Maas: Stanton County

Stanton County

Description

The boldest and bravest of pioneers headed west, by covered wagon and on foot, to carve out new lives from verdant prairie sod, near the riverbanks in the beautiful Elkhorn Valley. French fur trappers called the river Corne de Cerf, French for the "horn of the elk," due to the river and its tributaries resembling the antlers of a stag. It then became known as the Elkhorn River. Catfish, bullheads, perch, and bass provided a welcomed change in sparse diets. Here settlers established churches, schools, and towns in a raw wilderness where Ponca, Omaha, Sioux, and Pawnee tribes lived. The prairie grasses fed herds of buffalo, elk, deer, and bighorn sheep. Coyotes, foxes, and wolves roamed in abundance. This land was named Stanton County in honor of Edward M. Stanton, Abraham Lincoln's ex-secretary of war. Germans, Scandinavians, Bohemians, and Canadians settled in the picturesque river valley and were joined by settlers from Wisconsin and Virginia, as well as the Hoosiers from Indiana.

Reading Stories for Comprehension Success: Intermediate Level, Grades 4-6

Description

This is a flexible, high-interest program that can be used with all regular and special students, grades 4-6. Each volume provides over 45 factual stories with related teaching materials, 15 at each level.

Hollywood moviemaking is one of the constants of American life, but how much has it changed Reading Stories for Comprehension Success: Intermediate Level, Grades 4-6 download epub since the glory days of the big studios? David Bordwell argues that the principles of visual storytelling created in the studio era are alive and well, even in today's bloated blockbusters. American filmmakers have created a durable tradition - one that we should not be ashamed to call artistic, and one that survives in both mainstream entertainment and niche-marketed indie cinema. Bordwell traces the continuity of this tradition in a wide array of films made since 1960, from romantic comedies like "Jerry Maguire" and "Love Actually" to more imposing efforts like "A Beautiful Mind". He also draws upon testimony from writers, directors, and editors who are acutely conscious of employing proven principles of plot and visual style. Within the limits of the 'classical' approach, innovation can flourish. Bordwell examines how imaginative filmmakers have pushed the premises of the system in films such as JFK, Memento, and Magnolia.

The Moral Imperative of School Leadership download pdf

Michael G. Fullan: The Moral Imperative of School Leadership

The Moral Imperative of School Leadership

Description

'The Moral Imperative of School Leadership is an important read for school leader and system administrators, not so much because it provides a prescription of the future of public education, but more because it elevates the moral imperative of public schooling and enshrine s the view that effective school leadership must be drive from a deep moral purpose' - Journal of Educational Administration 'The Moral Imperative of School Leadership is sequel to what many heads consider Michael Fullan's best and most practical book, Leading in a Culture of Change. Here he follows up moral purpose, brought into sharp relief in individual schools. Without moral purpose, nothing of value is achieved. We learn how it is developed effectively and Michael Fullan makes the difficult but important case that truly moral school leadership recognizes its obligation to the wider community and other schools, an argument that those of us pushing for collegiates will welcome' - Tim Brighouse, Times Educational Supplement 'The Moral Imperative of School Leadership is another slim volume in a series of such texts by this powerful figure and, after a series of understandably laudatory statements by colleagues and admirers, actually commences by reflecting back on his previous text What's Worth Fighting For in the Principalship (1997). As one has come to expect from this eminent writer this is a highly readable, well structured and accessible text that is above all positive. Indeed I have no doubt that many will find the work inspirational' - Mark Brundett, School Leadership and Management The author examines the moral purpose of school leadership and its critical role in 'changing the context' in which the role is embedded. In this bold step forward, Michael Fullan calls for principals to become agents as well as beneficiaries of the processes of school change. Concepts explored in depth include: } why 'changing the context' should be the main agenda for the principalship } why barriers to the principalship exist } why the principal should be seen as the Chief Operating Officer of a school } why the role of the principal should figure more prominently within the system.

Charles Nicholl: The Lodger: Shakespeare on Silver Street

The Lodger: Shakespeare on Silver Street

Description

In 1612 Shakespeare gave evidence at the Court of Requests in Westminster - it is the only occasion his spoken words are recorded. The case seems routine - a dispute over an unpaid marriage-dowry - but it opens up an unexpected window into the dramatist's famously obscure life-story. Charles Nicholl applies a powerful biographical magnifying glass to this fascinating episode in Shakespeare's life. Marshalling evidence from a wide variety of sources, including previously unknown documentary material on the Mountjoys, he conjures up a detailed and compelling description of the circumstances in which Shakespeare lived and worked, and in which he wrote such plays as Othello, Measure for Measure and King Lear.

John Ashbery: Notes from the Air: Selected Later Poems

Notes from the Air: Selected Later Poems

Description

This long-awaited volume, a new selection of his later poems, spans ten major collections by one of America's most visionary and influential poets. Chosen by the author himself, the poems in Notes from the Air represent John Ashbery's best work from the past two decades, from the critically acclaimed April Galleons and Flow Chart to the 2005 National Book Award finalist Where Shall I Wander. While Ashbery has long been considered a powerful force in twentieth-century culture, Notes from the Air demonstrates clearly how important and relevant his writing continues to be, well into the twenty-first century. Many of the selections found here are regularly taught in university classrooms across the country, and critics and scholars vigorously debate his newest works as well as his classics. He has already published four major books since the turn of the new millennium, and, although 2007 marked his eightieth birthday, this legendary literary figure continues to write fresh, new, and vibrant poetry that remains as stimulating, provocative, and controversial as ever.Notes from the Air reveals, for the first time in one volume, the remarkable evolution of Ashbery's poetry from the mid-1980s into the new century, and offers an irresistible sampling of some of the finest work by a poet the New York Times has called a "national treasure."

Ruth was the toast of 1930s New York, a dress designer newly married to a wealthy adventurer, Bill Harkness. Just weeks after their wedding, however, Bill decamped for China in hopes of becoming the first Westerner to capture a giant panda an expedition on which many had embarked and failed miserably. Bill was also to fail in his quest, dying horribly alone in China and leaving his widow heartbroken and adrift. And so Ruth made the fateful decision to adopt her husband s dream as her own and set off on the adventure of a lifetime. The new king of Camelot wears no shining armor: Arthur and his knights have fallen and a new king rules. In the darkest forest...A scared, forsaken youth has become the most powerful and feared man in the world. Ruthless and unrestrained, Kerrigan has long ceased to be human. In the heart of London...A spirited peasant mired in drudgery, Seren dreams of becoming her own woman, but never expects that by fleeing her fate, she will meet her destiny.Their worlds are forever changed...Kerrigan's goal is simple: barter or kill Seren to claim Arthur's Round Table. Yet she is the one person who holds no fear of him. More than that, her nobility Notes from the Air: Selected Later Poems ebook pdf sparks something foreign inside him. In his nether realm, kindness is weakness and a king who harbors any sort of compassion loses his throne. For countless centuries, Kerrigan has lived alone in the shadows. Now Seren's courage has forced him into the light that will bring either salvation to both of them...or death."

Description

Time is a resource. Everyone knows it has to be managed. You mess with it at your peril. You can let it move fast or slowly but what you mustn't do is allow it to stop. On the Discworld time management is the job of the Monks of History, who store it and pump it from the places where it's wasted (like the underwater - how much time does a codfish need?) to places like cities, where there's never enough time. But the construction of the world's first truly accurate clock starts a race against, well, time for Lu Tze and his apprentice Lobsang Ludd. Because it will stop time. And when time stands still, everything stops with it. Then, there really is no future.

Tyron L. Inbody: The Many Faces of Christology

The Many Faces of Christology

Description

The Many Faces of Christology surveys the landscape of traditional and contemporary thought about Jesus. Inbody first grounds his survey in a concise discussion of research into Jesus as a historical person and explores the implications and relevance of that research for contemporary christological thought. In chapter two he outlines classical christology and trinitarian thought and then provides a preliminary sketch of a contemporary trinitarian christology that emphasizes relationship more than understanding the exact nature of God. In chapters three, four, and five, Inbody surveys the basic positions and contributions of evangelical, liberal/process and postliberal (including liberationist), and feminist/womanist christologies. In his final three chapters, Inbody uses christology to answer three key questions: -- Is atonment theology nothing more than "divinely sanctioned abuse?" -- What is the relationship of Christianity to Judaism? -- Is Christianity the one true path? This critical, mainstream survey provides pastors and seminarians an authoritative and comprehensive volume on the subject.

John Bradshaw: Cat Sense: The Feline Enigma Revealed

Cat Sense: The Feline Enigma Revealed

Description

From John Bradshaw, one of the world's leading experts on animal behaviour, and the author of the Sunday Times Bestseller, In Defence of Dogs, Cat Sense shows us the true, surprising nature of cats Cats are the most popular pet in the world. They outnumber the dog, man's 'best friend', by three to one. Yet today, they face unprecedented challenges in their life with humans: from conservationists who cast them as a threat to wildlife; from other cats who they compete for territory with; and from good-intentioned owners and vets with misconceptions of what they require. Cats need not so much our sympathy, but our understanding. Cat Sense offers us for the first time a truly scientific, yet deeply affectionate, picture of one of humanity's closest and most enigmatic companions. 'A mind-altering book ...delightful' - Lynne Truss, The Times 'Exceptionally thorough ...Bradshaw's concern and love for cats shines through ...You could buy a dozen books by the many cat whisperers, cat gurus and cat therapists that exist in our feline-obsessed modern world, but their accumulated wisdom would probably not help you understand your cats as well as Cat Sense' - Tom Cox, Observer 'An entertaining book, written in a relaxed style' - James McConnachie, Sunday Times 'Witty, surprising writing . ..There is his delight in detail, a talent for dismantling myths, but most importantly an ability to build a coherent and entertaining theory from an apparent contradiction that all cat-lovers will recognise: we seek to understand cats even though it is our lack of understanding that makes us love them' - Herald John Bradshaw is a biologist who founded and directs the world-renowned Anthrozoology Institute, based at the University of Bristol. He has been studying the behaviour of domestic cats and their owners for over 25 years, and is the author of many scientific articles, research papers and reviews.
